They say every Friday a new star is born. The 4th of July saw the debut of two such newcomers to Bollywood. Imran Khan via his 'Jaane tu ya jaane na' (JTYJN) and Harman Baweja through his 'Love Story 2050'. The similarities being both had their families to ride on in their debut vehicles. Amir Khan, the uncle of Imran, being the producer of the movie. Harry Baweja and family backing Harman.
The movies:
Coming to the movies, JTYJN was better than 2050 cos of its fresh look and well etched characters. The script, I must say, was not innovative at all with respect to both. 2050 was painful because of the shoddy acting of the leading man. Harman came across as whiney, stone-faced, pansy character who is seen pleading, begging and being painfully annoying. The man screws up the whole movie cos of his acting skills; the only saving grace of the movie being the special effects except for the dumb robot and the irritating 'boo'.
What worked for me:In JTYJN - Newbie Prateik Babbar as Amit... He was awesome and super cool dude. Sorry Imran, the good boy act was too much for me. I dig the bad guy..the cool, sarcastic and straightforward dude who doesnt think before he talks.. I luuuvvved him. I loved Ratna Pathak Shah and hope all moms are as cool as her. Imran Khan (Rats) was sincere in his efforts and so was his group of friends.
What didn't work for me: Genelia and her pathetic dialogue delivery. Would have been cool to have someone new debuting opposite Imran. Showing the two partners of the lead actors to be less than normal also didnt work for me. It might have been better if we didnt have a womaniser 'Susanth' and the Alice in Wonderland 'Meghna' justifying why they weren't right for the lead pair. Some parts of the movie were definitely too Bollywoodish. The dead father talking thru the picture frame. The cameo appearance of Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, was funny but appeared to be very lame. A good movie but nothing to wow about.
Love Story 2050.. Sorry Bawejas nothing worked for me except for the special effects and the cinematography!
